Le nom a surtout été porté autrefois dans la Meuse et la Haute-Marne. On trouve dans ces deux départements la forme voisine Crancée. Il semble qu'on ait affaire à un toponyme : le glossaire de l'IGN (voir bibliographie) signale les mots "cranche" et "crance" en Champagne avec le sens de trou, lieu où la marche et difficile. Le sens de lieu pierreux est également envisageable, c'est celui qui est retenu de plus en plus pour expliquer des noms de localités tels que Crans ou Crançot (39), voire Crancey (10). Un rapprochement avec l'allemand Kranz (= couronne) pourrait à la rigueur expliquer Crance, mais certainement pas Crancée. Il semble donc logique de l'éliminer.
